Thank you for the notice, bro. I’ll fix it as soon as possible and get back to you shortly.

    Man working at home

Whether returning to work after a health-related pause or looking to advance an established career, setting clear goals for 2026 can foster both professional growth and financial stability. For individuals receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), this planning process is especially critical, as it may involve unique considerations around income, health and benefit protections.

As 2025 winds down, many individuals are already reflecting on their progress and setting intentions for the coming year.

    Start with a Self-Assessment

Before setting goals, take stock of your current situation. Ask yourself:

    • What professional skills have I gained this year or want to gain in 2026?
    • Did I reach or make progress on my 2025 career goals, what do I want 2026 to look like?
    • What challenges did I face that I want to navigate differently in 2026?

For those enrolled in the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work (TTW) Program, vocational experts at Employment Networks (ENs) or state Vocational Rehabilitation agencies (VRs) are ready to help and can provide personalized guidance, encouragement and support to be able to plan for the year ahead.

Working with an EN or VR agency can help clarify career interests and identify training needs. These professionals offer personalized support, including benefits counseling and career planning services.

    Set SMART Career Goals

When setting goals, use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Examples might include:

    • Complete a certification in medical coding by June 2026.
    • Apply for 10 remote customer service jobs by March.
    • Attend one networking event each month.

This approach encourages accountability while allowing flexibility—important for individuals balancing work with medical or caregiving needs. Reviewing goals could change the entire outlook of your employment options. One recent client told her EN that she always wanted to be a psychiatric counselor and had completed much of the training. This led to her opening her own business – something she hadn’t thought was possible under TTW. In fact, the Ticket to Work Program supports a range of employment paths, including self-employment, and can help individuals pursue entrepreneurial goals through career counseling, benefits guidance and resource referrals.

    Revisit Your Financial Plan

Financial stability is a common aspiration that begins with concrete steps. Review your income, expenses, savings and any public benefits you may receive. Key actions include:

    • Creating or updating a monthly budget to reflect work income and benefits.
    • Building an emergency fund, even if in small increments.
    • Reviewing your eligibility for TTW work incentives can help stretch your dollars further.

ENs can provide referrals to financial literacy resources and support you in understanding how earned income may affect your SSDI benefits over time. One EN client was able to be completely debt free after only three months of working. ENs can also connect Ticketholders with budgeting tools and work‑incentive guidance that help them manage new income responsibly, ensuring they maintain long‑term financial stability while adjusting to employment.

    Explore Upskilling Opportunities

2026 may be the right year to explore training or education to improve job prospects. Short-term certifications, online courses or community college programs can lead to roles in fast-growing industries such as health care, technology or logistics.

Consider free or low-cost programs that align with your goals, such as:

For Ticketholders, education and reschooling can be part of their plan. One recent client received grant money for reeducation as a nurse. Another earned a certification in graphic arts as she healed from heart transplant surgery.

Protect Your Health And Work-Life Balance

Career growth is important, and so is sustainable progress. Set boundaries that support your well-being. This could include planning for regular medical appointments, choosing flexible work arrangements or setting goals around reducing burnout.

If you need accommodations at work, ENs and VRs can help you understand your rights and give guidance on requesting the necessary support under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

As you look ahead to 2026, thoughtful planning can set the foundation for personal and professional success. Whether your goal is to start working, advance in your current role or achieve greater financial security, taking practical, informed steps now can help make the new year a time of meaningful growth.

For those using the Ticket to Work Program, the path forward doesn’t have to be taken alone. Free, expert assistance is available to help turn goals into action steps—so you can move into the year with confidence and clarity. No matter where you are starting, 2026 holds the potential for progress, purpose and renewed possibility.
