No matter what we are doing, it only takes one buzz or ringtone to break our concentration.
Smartphones are designed to grab our attention, not give it back. That is why one simple app stood out to me this year for doing something most apps do not even try to do: help us take a break from our phones.
It is called Focus Friend, and it is my app of the year.
At first glance, Focus Friend looks almost too simple. The graphics are intentionally basic and a little dorky. That turns out to be part of its charm.
When you start a focus session, a small bean-like character appears on the screen and starts knitting socks. The catch is this: the bean only knits if you put your phone down.
Set a timer for 10, 20, or 30 minutes and let the session begin. As long as you resist checking email, social media, or text messages, the bean keeps knitting. Pick up your phone and the app politely asks if you are sure you want to stop. It also reminds you that the bean will be sad if you quit early.
That small moment of guilt is surprisingly effective.
When the timer ends, the bean has knitted socks that you can trade in for decorations to customize its room. New furniture, colors, and items unlock over time, turning focus into a simple game rather than a chore.
Focus Friend also includes a deep focus mode. This option blocks notifications and access to distracting apps until the timer is finished. It creates a temporary digital boundary that makes it easier to stay on task.
The app was developed by author and YouTube creator Hank Green with a focus on helping people with ADHD, but you do not need ADHD to benefit from it. Anyone who struggles to stay focused or wants to be more intentional with their screen time can use it.
Focus Friend is free to download and does not sell your data. There is an optional subscription that supports the artists who create the graphics and music for the app.
